Spotify has launched a desktop app, Studio by Spotify Labs, that lets users create personalised podcasts using AI, TechCrunch reported on May 21.

The company said the app connects personal data such as email, calendars and documents to generate daily briefings in text or audio formats. It also offers an AI agent that browses the web and pulls personal information to create custom podcasts.

For example, users can create a podcast with a complex request such as: "Create a daily audio briefing for an Italy road trip. Use my calendar and reservations to guide my day, recommend nearby dinner restaurants, and wrap up with a podcast to listen to while driving."

AI-generated podcasts are saved to a Spotify library and synced across devices. They are not made public and are available for personal use only. Spotify warned that the app is in an early preview stage and that the AI may make mistakes or generate inaccurate content.

Spotify is launching the app as a research preview in more than 20 markets and making it available to selected users aged 18 and older.

Studio by Spotify Labs is expected to compete with Google's NotebookLM, which generates podcasts based on materials provided by users. Several companies including Adobe and ElevenLabs are adopting approaches similar to NotebookLM.

Ahead of the desktop app launch, Spotify recently released a command-line tool for users of coding tools such as Claude Code and Codex. The new Studio app now allows users who do not know how to code to create personal podcasts.
