South Korea's Personal Information Protection Commission held the second plenary meeting of the 2026 Personal Information Future Forum on Tuesday and discussed “redesigning the definition of personal information in the AI era.”

Lee Sang-wook (이상욱), a professor in the philosophy department at Hanyang University, examined what the future direction for humanity should be in the AI era, based on questions about the nature of AI technology. Kim Do-yeop (김도엽), a lawyer at Kim & Chang, made policy suggestions as he addressed practical cases and legal issues related to accountability and transparency that should be considered to lawfully process personal information in the AI era.

Forum members agreed that it is necessary to review whether the current personal information protection system can sufficiently reflect changes in AI technology. They continued in-depth discussions to explore personal information policies suited to the AI era.

Vice Chairperson Lee Jeong-ryeol (이정렬) said, “This is a time when we need to think about existing personal information regulations, as the scale and scope of personal information use expand and patterns of data movement and combination become more complex.” He added, “We will build a personal information protection system for the AI era that the public can trust, in line with the changed technological environment.”
