[DigitalToday reporter Dae-geon Seok] Samsung Electronics and Google unveiled two Android XR (extended reality)-based AI glasses for the first time. The companies on May 19 (local time) showcased AI glasses designed by global eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker at Google I/O 2026 held at Google headquarters in Mountain View, California. It was the first time the actual designs were revealed since the collaboration was announced in December last year.
The new AI glasses are designed as a companion device to support Galaxy AI phones. They have no display, but include a speaker, camera and microphone. Users can run various functions using only voice without taking out a smartphone.
According to the companies, the Gentle Monster model was implemented with a bold and original style, while the Warby Parker model features a classic design. They explained that they combined Samsung's hardware technology and Google's AI services with the designs of the two eyewear brands to complete an eyewear form factor that can be worn at all times in everyday life.
When users call up Google's AI Gemini linked to a Galaxy AI phone, they can use voice to get directions to a destination, get nearby cafe recommendations and even place a drink order. The glasses also support real-time voice translation that reflects a conversation partner's tone of voice, and translation of text on menus and signs. Message summaries, voice-based schedule additions and instant photo capture using the camera are also available.
Jung-hyun Kim (김정현), a vice president at Samsung Electronics' MX Business Division, said, "These AI glasses are an important milestone in expanding Samsung's AI vision." He added, "Based on Samsung's mobile leadership and collaboration with partners, we will focus on expanding the Galaxy ecosystem experience to provide a more meaningful user experience."
Shahram Izadi (샤람 이자디), a vice president in charge of Android XR at Google, said, "The new glasses embody Google and Samsung's shared vision to make AI more useful in everyday life." He added, "By adding premium designs from our eyewear partners to Samsung's hardware leadership, we will provide a natural hands-free experience."
The new AI glasses are set to be released in the second half of this year, and detailed specifications will be announced later.
