The Broadcast Media Communications Office said on May 19 that malicious emails are being spread that impersonate the Broadcast Media Communications Commission and send false official notices of an advance fine notice to Naver users.
The email is sent with the subject, "Advance notice of fine and guidance on submitting opinions for violation of the Information and Communications Network Act (No. 2026-51)." It uses public notice service content posted on the office website. Clicking the "Check notice and attachment" button in the message links to a fake screen that asks for a Naver password.
The office warned that if passwords and other personal information are stolen this way, it could lead to additional damage such as identity theft and financial fraud. It urged users not to click buttons in emails from unclear sources or enter personal information.
The office recommended that users who asked for confirmation about the malicious emails change their passwords. It also reported the case to the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), which blocked the internet address (URL). The office said it will continue to cooperate with KISA to prevent damage caused by similar URLs.
