Subnautica 2, developed by Krafton unit Unknown Worlds, sold more than 1 million copies on the day it launched in early access and ranked No. 1 in Steam global top revenue.
Krafton's creative studio Unknown Worlds released Subnautica 2 in early access on May 15. It has maintained a “very positive” user rating on Steam.
Video content also drew a strong response ahead of the launch. A cinematic trailer released on April 30 topped 10 million cumulative views, and a gameplay trailer released on May 9 exceeded 5 million views. The game ranked No. 1 on the Steam global wishlist for 36 straight weeks before launch, and that built-up anticipation is seen as having led to the sales performance.
Subnautica 2 is the official sequel to the Subnautica series in the marine survival genre and is set on an alien planet different from the previous title. It applies graphics based on Unreal Engine 5 and introduces, for the first time in the series, a cooperative mode for up to 4 players.
Executive producer Fernando Melo (페르난도 멜로) said, “Early access for Subnautica 2 marks the start of an adventure to explore unknown deep seas together with players around the world.” He added, “Players’ voices are a compass that tells us the direction we should take, and on that basis we will complete an even deeper survival experience.”
Krafton executive Lee Jin-hyung (이진형) said, “Selling 1 million copies on the launch day and reaching No. 1 in Steam global revenue is an indicator of the trust sent by players around the world.” He added, “We look forward to the journey of listening to players’ voices and completing the game together.”
