SAP on May 12 (local time) unveiled its "Autonomous Enterprise" vision at its annual Sapphire 2026 conference.

The company said the autonomous enterprise is not a set of AI agent tools, but is focused on fundamentally redesigning how people and AI work together.

At the core is the SAP Business AI Platform. The platform integrates the business technology platform, business data cloud and business AI into a single environment, and is designed to help agents access the data, processes and control needed for operations inside large companies.

Joule, a generative AI assistant launched in 2023, sits at the centre of the SAP Business AI Platform.

Business users can open an AI chat window and make a request to use more than 50 domain-specific Joule assistants. It can be used mainly across 5 business domains: finance, supply chain management, spend management, human resources management and customer engagement.

Manoj Swaminathan (마노즈 스와미나탄), chief product officer for SAP Business Suite, said Joule identifies context and connects the appropriate assistant. He said in most cases users do not need to search an agent catalogue themselves. Users can call a specific agent through an @mention method when they want to name one.

SAP's newly introduced tool, Joule Studio, supports customers in building agentic AI experiences optimised for their internal needs. It can be developed in languages such as Python and TypeScript, and tools such as Claude Code and Cursor can also be used. Swaminathan said users without development experience, as well as professional developers, can describe their intent in a conversational interface and the system generates code. He said it is possible to build a finished app within a software development life cycle that includes requirements, technical specifications, code and tests.
