Google is integrating Gemini across the Android platform and expanding it into an AI operating layer spanning smartphones, browsers, cars and laptops, CNBC reported on Monday.
Apple is expected to unveil a Gemini-based Apple Intelligence update at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, and Google announced its AI-centered Android strategy ahead of that.
Ahead of its annual I/O developer conference starting on May 19, Google previewed AI app automation, Chrome improvements for Android, creator tools, an Android Auto overhaul and new security features. Sameer Samat (사미르 사맛), who oversees the Android ecosystem, said, "We are transitioning from an operating system to an intelligence system."
According to Google, Gemini Intelligence integrated into Android can move across apps, understand on-screen content and handle tasks that require switching among multiple services. For example, it can review a barbecue guest list, plan a menu, add ingredients to an Instacart cart and then seek user approval before checkout in a single flow. Samat said it always asks the user before completing a transaction, adding, "A human is always in the loop."
The app automation feature will first be applied this summer to the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel smartphones and then expand to more Android devices including smartwatches, cars, glasses and laptops.
Android Auto has also been redesigned around Gemini. Android Auto is currently installed in more than 250 million vehicles. It includes the largest map update in 10 years and Gemini features that help with tasks such as ordering dinner while driving.
Google parent Alphabet's shares have risen more than 140 percent over the past year, far outpacing Apple, which gained 40 percent. Investors are watching whether Gemini can establish itself at the center of everyday products, CNBC reported.
