A service that allows small mail items to be sent from home mailboxes will be introduced.
The Ministry of Science and ICT’s Postal Service will implement the “semi-registered mailbox service” from May 11.
Customers who want to use the service should write the address on the surface of the item. They should also write the 16-digit pre-registration number issued through the Post Office app’s simple pre-registration service and the last 4 digits of their mobile phone number, then drop it into a mailbox. Items deposited by 7 a.m. that day will be collected by a mail carrier and processed after being accepted at a post office counter.
The semi-registered mailbox service expands the existing semi-registered mail service to include collection from customers’ mailboxes. The delivery period remains the same, within 3 days. The fee stays at 1,800 won, while the weight limit increases to 500 grams from 200 grams and the total dimensions of length, width and height expand to 45 cm from 35 cm.
This is expected to make it more convenient to send small items frequently traded secondhand, as well as clothing, books and photo cards. No collection or delivery is carried out on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays. The Postal Service also offers a next-day delivery service for a fee of 2,400 won for customers who want faster delivery.
Along with the launch of the semi-registered mailbox service, the Postal Service will cut the price of the post office’s “No. 0 box” to 300 won from 500 won. It will also provide mailing envelopes for the semi-registered mailbox service free of charge for a limited time at post offices.
Park In-hwan (박인환), head of the Postal Service, said, “We will continue to expand everyday services that reduce the burden on the public and small business owners and improve convenience.”
