Cardano has launched a physical Visa debit card, expanding the payment network for its ADA token.

On April 22, blockchain media outlet The Crypto Basic reported the card is designed to allow Cardano tokens and more than 680 digital assets to be used at Visa merchants.

The launch expands beyond existing virtual cards. Users can use the Cardano Card for both in-store and online payments. It allows cryptocurrency balances to be used like a regular debit card for offline purchases and online payments.

EMURGO and Wirex developed the card, and Visa provides the payment infrastructure. Users can manage card functions in the Wirex app, including checking balances, tracking spending and controlling accounts. It also links to Apple Pay and Google Pay to support contactless payments.

The Cardano Card also highlights its rewards structure. It said it offers up to 8 percent Cryptoback on all transactions. It also targets use at home and abroad by lowering foreign exchange fees for overseas payments and supporting access to global ATMs.

The card is currently available in more than 130 countries. Availability may vary depending on local regulations. Card issuance and delivery fees are also set differently by region.

Cardano is planning additional features beyond payments. It said future updates may include loan functions backed by ADA holdings and staking functions through the card interface. It is also pursuing a plan to return part of the revenue generated from card activity to the Cardano treasury to be used for ecosystem proposals and ongoing development funding.

This is not the first time Cardano has expanded ADA payments. Recently, it linked with DFX.swiss to support ADA payments at 137 SPAR stores in Switzerland. The physical card differs in that it does not rely on integration with specific merchants and instead takes the form of a branded card that reaches everyday payments broadly.

Against this backdrop, Cardano is seeking to broaden cryptocurrency payments from specific partnerships to general card payments. With the combination of a physical card, up to 8 percent Cryptoback and support in about 130 countries, the next focus will be how far ADA’s use expands in the real payment market.
