The National Radio Research Agency under the Ministry of Science and ICT said on Sunday that it led standardisation discussions at the 49th international standardisation meeting on inter-system communication and information exchange (ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 6) recently held in Seoul, including the creation of an artificial intelligence (AI) advisory group proposed by South Korea.
About 60 experts from about 10 countries took part in the meeting to discuss securing next-generation inter-system communications interface technology. The agency cited as a key outcome the creation of the advisory group (AG-AI) led by South Korea. South Korea and China were appointed co-convenors of the group. A convenor is the person responsible for leading and operating the advisory group.
The new advisory group will set the direction for standardising foundational communications technologies within SC 6, and analyse linkages among technologies and gaps in standardisation. It is expected to lead core AI-related standardisation agendas, including drawing up a strategic roadmap.
South Korea also took on the role of convenor for the Network, Transport and Future Networks working group (WG 7), enabling it to strengthen its leadership in international standardisation in the network interface field.
Chang-rim Jung (정창림), head of the National Radio Research Agency, said it would continue to actively support innovative technologies from domestic industry, academia and research institutes so they can be adopted as international standards, strengthening the global competitiveness of South Korean companies and leading to the creation of new markets.
