South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT said on April 19 it will develop agentic artificial intelligence and use it at work to change how people work with the latest AI technology.

The ministry has recently formed a development team led by younger employees with AI capabilities and experience to build AI tools that address inconveniences in routine work processes. As its first output, the team developed AI that automatically searches, organises and analyses overnight global AI industry and technology trends and social media posts by prominent figures in the AI field. The compiled updates will be shared every morning from April 20 with relevant staff or any employees who want them.

The team will also take part in the "2026 National AI Competition - AI Champion competition (expert track)". It plans to expand development of AI agents that automate tasks that civil servants spend significant time and costs on, including automatically producing summary tables for large documents, automating office work and creating Korean-language meeting minutes.

The ministry previously used an AI collaboration tool to automate processes from requesting document preparation to collecting materials. It is continuing efforts to innovate work practices, including significantly simplifying reporting lines on the platform. The ministry also plans to hold an "Agentic AI Workshop" within this month, in which senior officials and staff including Second Vice Minister Je-myoung Ryu (류제명) will develop AI services themselves through vibe coding and explore ways to apply AI agents to work.

Bae Kyung-hoon (배경훈), deputy prime minister and minister of science and ICT, said: "Even in the public sector, whether to use AI is no longer a choice but a matter of survival." He added: "I will support MSIT staff so they can be the first to understand and use AI well and take the lead in creating work innovation cases."
