The KOSPI rose more than 1 percent on Thursday to finish above the 5,800 mark. Ahead of ceasefire talks between the United States and Iran, expectations appeared to outweigh concerns in the market.

The KOSPI ended up 80.86 points, or 1.40 percent, at 5,858.87. It opened up 98.11 points, or 1.70 percent, at 5,876.12 and at one point jumped as much as 2.43 percent to 5,918.59, briefly touching 5,900.

By investor type, foreigners were the sole net buyers, purchasing 1.1026 trillion won worth of shares. Retail investors sold 1.2280 trillion won and institutions sold 294.0 billion won.

Most of the top stocks by market capitalisation rose. Samsung Electronics closed up 0.98 percent at 206,000 won, while SK Hynix gained 2.91 percent to end at 1,027,000 won.

Hanwha Aerospace rose 3.86 percent, KB Financial gained 2.66 percent, SK Square added 1.43 percent and Doosan Enerbility rose 0.20 percent. Hyundai Motor was flat.

LG Energy Solution fell 2.14 percent and Samsung Biologics slipped 0.57 percent.

The Kosdaq closed up 17.63 points, or 1.64 percent, at 1,093.63.

The won-dollar exchange rate ended at 1,482.90 won per dollar, up 6.90 won from the previous session.
