South Korea's KOSPI index broke above the 6,000 mark for the first time on Tuesday.
The KOSPI closed up 114.22 points, or 1.91 percent, at 6,083.86.
The index opened at 6,022.70, up 53.06 points, or 0.89 percent, hitting 6,000 at the start of trading.
It later dipped below 6,000 before extending gains and rising as high as 6,144.71.
The Kosdaq ended up 0.25 points, or 0.02 percent, at 1,165.25.
