Block co-founder Jack Dorsey (잭 도시) has laid out a plan in which artificial intelligence can replace a substantial part of middle managers' roles, including tracking projects, identifying issues, assigning work and sharing key information. Block cut about 4,000 employees, about 40 percent of its workforce, in February, citing an AI transition.

Cointelegraph reported on Tuesday that Dorsey, in a joint blog post with Block lead independent director Roelof Botha (룰로프 보타), said AI can carry out organisational coordination faster than people. Block said it has entered the early stages of shifting to such a model.

The two said they are re-examining the existing assumption that organisations must be hierarchical structures centred on human managers. A system in which information moves up from employees to managers and executives and then back down was effective in the past, they said, but AI can now perform the same function more efficiently.

Block also set out a plan to reorganise employee roles into three tracks. "Individual contributors" build and maintain operating systems. "Directly responsible individuals" have the authority to use resources needed to solve specific problems. "Player-coaches" handle some management tasks, such as mentoring and support, while also writing code and developing products.

It said people will continue to be involved in core business judgments and ethical decisions. Block also reinstated some employees who left the company during the layoffs in early March.

The plan is drawing attention for positioning AI not as a simple productivity tool but as a means of changing an organisation's operating structure itself. It remains to be seen, however, whether automating management functions will actually improve efficiency or create new confusion over accountability and corporate culture, depending on Block's execution results.

Still, the claim that AI can coordinate organisations more efficiently and the task of establishing it stably in actual corporate operations are separate issues. How Block strikes a balance among productivity, decision-making speed and corporate culture will be seen as a key variable that will determine whether the plan succeeds.
