Google has teased the launch of a new wearable device through a collaboration with basketball star Stephen Curry (스테픈 커리). A teaser video was released, prompting speculation that a product reveal is close.
On March 31 local time, IT outlet Engadget reported that Google recently hinted at a new wrist device in a short video Curry posted on Instagram. The roughly 15-second clip shows Curry playing basketball and features a wristband with an orange accent on a gray background. A Google logo appears at the end of the video.
The video also included the phrase, "A new relationship with your health coming soon." No details were disclosed about the product's functions or specifications. The band is shown relatively clearly, but no display is visible as on a typical smartwatch.
Google also withheld details. The company said, "A Performance Advisor is preparing something special with the team and we will share more soon," suggesting the launch is near. Curry also said it would be a meaningful product for health and wellness and that, in some ways, it would be a first-of-its-kind product, but avoided specifics.
Speculation has emerged that the product could be a screenless fitness band. Based on its appearance, some analysis says it resembles products from fitness wearable company WHOOP. That would mean a focus on measuring and analysing biometric data without a display. It is not yet confirmed how Google's product would differentiate itself.
From a market perspective, the teaser also signals potential changes in competition in fitness wearables. WHOOP was recently valued at about $10 billion and was reported to have raised $575 million. Investors were reported to include global sports stars such as LeBron James and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Curry has continued collaborating with Google since last year, participating as its Performance Advisor.
