Kakao said on March 31 it will introduce the "Text Hip" promotional event for emoticons based on literary works.

The Text Hip promotional event is a project that reinterprets sentences from literary writers' works in the form of Kakao emoticons.

Kakao collaborated with five Korean writers: Sun-kyung Ko (고선경), Geum-hee Kim (김금희), Ae-ran Kim (김애란), Jun Park (박준) and Se-rang Chung (정세랑). It is releasing five emoticon products, one for each writer, and reconfigured sentences from each work into emoticon form. It produced text-focused content by combining sentences with matching illustrations.

To mark the promotional event, Kakao prepared an offline programme called an "Emoticon Reading" with the participating writers. The event will have writers take part directly and read sentences from their works.

Ji-hyun Kim (김지현), leader of Kakao's Emoticon Tribe, said the promotional event is an attempt to expand beyond existing character-centred emoticons and propose a type of content centred on text itself. He said Kakao will broaden the spectrum of emoticon content through various creative genres and collaborations.
