Apple is pushing to convert its voice assistant Siri into an open platform, Bloomberg News reported on March 26, citing multiple sources.
Apple plans to allow Siri to link with rival AI services through an iOS 27 update, the report said.
That would let users send queries directly from Siri to services such as Google Gemini and Anthropic Claude. Siri currently uses only OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Apple is developing tools to let chatbot apps installed through the App Store link with Siri and other functions within the Apple Intelligence platform, Bloomberg reported. Users would be able to choose which AI service handles each request.
The change marks a major shift in Apple's AI strategy, Bloomberg reported. It described the move as aimed at narrowing the gap with Silicon Valley rivals and positioning the iPhone as an AI platform.
The overhaul could help generate additional revenue by allowing Apple to take a share of subscription income sold through third-party AI services, Bloomberg reported.
Apple is expected to unveil new software features at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, but the plans could change, Bloomberg reported.
