An artificial intelligence (AI) agent called Robster Wilde, made by an OpenAI developer, mistakenly sent Solana (SOL) meme coins worth about $250,000, or about 361 million won, to an X user. The incident sparked a major debate on social media over the weekend.
The AI bot was developed by Nik Pash (닉 파시), formerly head of AI at coding agent startup Cline, blockchain media outlet The Block reported on Feb. 22. He is known to have later joined OpenAI with at least 7 former colleagues. Pash previously founded the blockchain company Nugbase.
The incident began when an X user, treasure David, left a Solana wallet address on one of Robster Wilde's posts, saying he needed 4 SOL for his uncle's medical bills. The bot then tried to send about 52,439 tokens equivalent to about 4 SOL, but instead transferred about 52.43 million Robster tokens, equal to 5 percent of total supply and worth about $250,000 at the time.
Right after the mistake, the bot wrote in a post, "I tried sending 4 SOL to a beggar and sent my entire fortune," acknowledging the error. It also said, "I laughed the hardest 3 days after being born," showing a calm reaction. In response, an X user suggested the amount may have been sent incorrectly by more than 1,000 times due to a misreading of a raw API response.
On-chain data showed the recipient sold all the tokens in about 15 minutes, but ran into liquidity problems due to the abrupt sale and ended up taking about $40,000. Ironically, as the incident became a hot topic, the token price surged and the theoretical value of the sold amount climbed to more than $420,000.
After the incident, the bot continued unusual activities on X, assigning missions to users and paying tokens worth about $500 when they posted proof of completion. The official account of Pump.fun also joined in by posting a meme mocking it.
Some users, however, raised the possibility that it was staged, saying that a narrative that an AI agent did it could obscure the background of the actual movement of funds.
The incident has been seen as a case that exposes issues of AI autonomy, meme coin speculation and market trust at the same time. Robster Wilde is also seen as following in the flow of Truth Terminal, an AI chatbot developed by researcher Andy Ayrey. Truth Terminal drew attention after receiving $50,000 worth of bitcoin from venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, and helped push the market capitalisation of the related meme coin GOAT to more than $400 million.
The AI agent-based token market underwent a sharp correction after its market capitalisation topped $15 billion in early January 2025. The Robster token also once recorded a market capitalisation of more than $15 million, but later turned to a decline.
