Startups pitching LLM wrappers and AI aggregator models will face a crisis amid the generative AI boom, TechCrunch reported on Feb. 21, citing Darren Mowry (대런 모리), a vice president who leads Google Cloud, DeepMind and Alphabet’s global startup organization.
LLM wrappers focus on solving specific problems by adding a user experience layer on top of existing large language models. But a strategy of relying on a backend model and releasing products without differentiation no longer works in the market, Mowry said.
AI aggregators are platforms that integrate multiple LLMs into a single interface, allowing users to access various models. Mowry said such models are also unlikely to sustain growth. He said users want solutions that combine practical knowledge and skills rather than simple interfaces, and that differentiated value is important in the AI market.
In the early days of cloud computing, startups emerged that resold AWS infrastructure, but most fell by the wayside as Amazon strengthened its own enterprise tools. AI aggregators are under similar pressure and are likely to be pushed out if they do not offer differentiated services. By contrast, vibe coding and developer platforms are showing strong growth, and AI-powered consumer technology is also promising, Mowry said.
