Stripe’s machine payments protocol (MPP) supports automatic payments using AI agents and could become a turning point for the micropayments market, an outlook said to have emerged.
Cointelegraph reported on March 23 that Forrester senior analyst Meng Liu (멩 리우) expects MPP to replace existing manual payment methods and open a new digital economy.
MPP is an open protocol designed to let AI agents carry out transactions automatically. It connects with existing payment networks and supports various payment methods such as digital wallets and cryptocurrencies. Forrester assessed this as a structural shift from human-led payments to machine-to-machine transactions, and expects it to be a chance for payments to move into a programmable stage.
Micropayments monetise digital content and services through small transactions, but complex payment procedures and consumers’ psychological resistance have blocked wider adoption. If AI agents handle payments automatically, those barriers would disappear and micropayments could be activated, the report said.
Stripe plans to use MPP to expand into blockchain-based payments.
