[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang (황치규)] Google is introducing a new setting that will allow Android apps to be installed from outside the Play Store, TechCrunch reported on March 19.

Previously, only apps from verified developers could be installed. Under the move, users will be able to disable security settings themselves and install outside apps. Google added steps such as enabling developer mode, rebooting and authentication, and a 24-hour waiting period, citing security concerns.

Users can change security settings through the process, then give final approval to install outside apps through biometric authentication or by entering a PIN. Google said the move was a follow-up measure under its antitrust lawsuit settlement with Epic Games. Google also decided to cut Play Store fees to 20 percent.
