On March 18, South Korea's KOSPI jumped more than 5 percent to move back above the 5,900 level.

The KOSPI closed up 284.55 points, or 5.04 percent, from the previous session at 5,925.03. It opened at 5,767.10, up 126.62 points, or 2.24 percent, and quickly extended gains in the afternoon.

Volatility increased during the session as program buying flowed in sharply. At 2:34:13 p.m., a sidecar was triggered, a temporary suspension of program buy orders in the main bourse. At the time, the KOSPI200 futures index was up 5.08 percent from the previous close at 887.25.

The Kosdaq also rose. It ended up 27.44 points, or 2.41 percent, at 1,164.38.

The won-dollar exchange rate closed at 1,483.1 won, down 10.5 won.
