[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang] Meta is considering a plan to cut more than 20 percent of its workforce, Reuters reported on Friday, citing three sources.

Reuters said the move is aimed at offsetting hefty AI infrastructure investment costs and preparing for work efficiency gains from adopting AI.

The scale of the layoffs has not been decided and the timing has not been set. Meta senior executives have recently shared the layoff plan with senior leaders and instructed them to draw up measures to reduce headcount, it was reported. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said it was “speculative reporting on theoretical approaches” that have not been decided.

If a 20 percent cut is confirmed, it would be the largest since restructuring that it named the “year of efficiency” in late 2022 to early 2023. Meta had about 79,000 employees as of Dec. 31 last year.
