Nvidia is set to sharply strengthen its CPU strategy in the AI chip market. Nvidia will unveil its AI-optimised Vera CPU at its annual GTC event running from March 16 to 19, CNBC reported on March 13. It will present a new CPU-centric computing paradigm, the report said.
Nvidia has dominated the AI market with GPUs, but is now expanding into CPUs as their role rises with the spread of agentic AI.
While GPUs are optimised for training and running AI models, CPUs handle large-scale data processing and coordination of AI agents. Nvidia has started large-scale CPU deployments in cooperation with Meta, marking a new phase for its chip strategy, CNBC reported.
As the CPU market is reshaped around AI, AMD and Intel, long-time CPU leaders, are also on alert. CPU deliveries are being delayed due to supply shortages, and prices have risen by more than 10 percent. AMD is pushing to expand production to meet surging AI demand, and Intel plans to increase supply from the second quarter of this year.
Nvidia is focusing on a strategy to provide performance optimised for AI workloads through ARM-based CPUs and to boost synergy with its GPUs. This differs from the x86 architecture used by Intel and AMD. Nvidia is also pursuing a platform strategy that spans not only its own CPUs but also x86- and RISC-V-based CPUs.
