An XRP Ledger (XRPL) developer has sparked a clash within the community after saying he would sell XRP at $27, pitting investors who prefer a long-term holding strategy of never selling against those considering profit-taking.
The Crypto Basic, a blockchain media outlet, reported on Feb. 10 that an XRPL developer, Bird, recently posted on X, formerly Twitter, that he had been asked, “Why do you plan to sell XRP at $27?” He said he plans to take profits in stages at $10, $27 and at higher levels.
Bird described the profit-taking as a deliberate and necessary decision. “Crypto has dominated my life for the last five years,” he said, adding that he now wants to convert some assets into cash and RLUSD to buy a home and prepare to take care of his family. He also stressed that failing to take profits in the past remains a major regret, and that profit-taking is not betrayal but “discipline.” The goal, he said, is not simply a price rise but tangible improvements in life.
XRP currently trades at about $1.43, prompting criticism that a $27 selling strategy is far removed from reality. Some community members argued it is too early to discuss selling targets when XRP has not regained $4 or $10.
Others view Bird’s approach positively as a form of risk management. Setting targets and locking in profits in stages is reasonable in a highly volatile market, they said.
A community figure, Arthur (아서), said XRP could reach $100 within 5 to 10 years in the long term, but added that taking some profits around $10 is justified. Another user, Majiq Mat (마직 맷), pointed to repeated downturns over the past six months and said a staggered selling strategy is needed to secure opportunities to buy back on dips. He said phased profit-taking is necessary.
Some also proposed specific allocation strategies. JRBeast (JR비스트) shared a plan to sell 10 percent of holdings four times while keeping at least 60 percent for the long term. Another commentator, Saint Street (세인트 스트리트), added that a structure of holding 80 percent for the long term and selling only a portion is reasonable.
Some offered a different view. X user naivetyisbliss (@naivetyisbliss) argued that the need to sell could diminish if profit-based services become active in the future. For example, if XRP is priced at $25, holding 10,000 XRP and earning an annual 3 percent return could make holding more advantageous than selling, the user said. The user also added that above $50, the appeal of long-term holding could grow further.
Guys, I got grilled today by a few people asking why the hell I would sell XRP at $27. Bro, I am 100% taking profits on XRP at $10, $27, and at higher targets beyond that. Crypto has consumed my life for the last five years, and at times it’s taken me out of the real world,…
