Databricks, a cloud-based data platform, has unveiled an AI agent called Genie Code to automate data engineering and analytics, SiliconANGLE reported on March 11 local time.
The announcement is part of a move to expand the role of AI agents beyond software engineering to enterprise data workflows. Databricks also acquired Quotient AI, a startup that evaluates AI agent performance.
Genie Code goes beyond code assistance to plan and execute data tasks. It is designed so AI can interpret data directly and optimize work. Ken Wong (켄 웡), a senior director of product management at Databricks, said existing coding agents focus on code completion but data work requires more complex context. He said data context is not stored in source files and operates by analyzing organizational data systems and past query patterns to understand user intent.
Genie Code is mainly used within the Databricks platform, but it can also connect to external data sources. This would mean data engineers shift from writing code to supervising and coordinating AI agents.
