TechCrunch reported on Feb. 5 that Reddit is moving to make AI-based search a new revenue model and to combine it with traditional search.
After reporting fourth-quarter results last year, Reddit stressed that AI search was an opportunity to generate revenue beyond a simple feature. Reddit said generative AI search was better suited to most queries.
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman (스티브 허프만) said, "Reddit's strength is providing multiple perspectives to questions that do not have a single right answer." He said existing search was closer to discovery, but large language models (LLMs) could also do that well. He stressed that AI search would go beyond providing simple information and transform the user experience. Reddit said weekly active users of AI search rose from 1,000,000 to 15,000,000 last year.
Reddit is improving its AI answer interface to be more media-focused. It plans to use AI to offer a personalized experience regardless of whether users are logged in. Last year it worked on integrating its AI search feature, "Reddit Answers," with its existing search. It is adding 5 languages and experimenting with search results that include media beyond text.
