In February, after a long cold spell, the entertainment industry is swinging between highs and lows. As BTS teases a comeback in Seoul's Gwanghwamun, the K-pop Demon Hunters OST track "Golden" became the first K-pop song to win an award at the Grammy Awards. Attention is also focused on dating rumours involving a popular idol member and on some fans' excessive support for some male stars embroiled in allegations.

Public interest is also pouring in over idols living a second life outside the entertainment industry and the global activity of Korean heritage actors.

· [Issue PICK] "We believe you" despite allegations: Kim Soo-hyun→Cha Eun-woo→Kim Seon-ho line

Some stars are receiving fervent support despite various allegations casting a deep shadow. A notable commonality is that they are male stars, not female stars.

Actor Kim Seon-ho has emerged as the subject of controversy after it became known he received settlement payments through a family corporation. He is caught up in allegations including tax avoidance and violations of existing law after it became known he received settlement payments through a family corporation he established during his time with a former agency.

It mirrors the recent case of singer and actor Cha Eun-woo, who faced domestic backlash after being embroiled in allegations of tax evasion involving hundreds of millions of won. Earlier, Cha Eun-woo was swept up in suspicions after media reports said the National Tax Service notified him of additional taxes of more than 20 billion won over allegations including income tax evasion.

Although a shadow has been cast over Kim Seon-ho and Cha Eun-woo, overseas fans are still raising voices of support. Posts on social media and online communities include messages such as "We can all make mistakes" and "We believe you." Some posts directly mention their names, including "I support Kim Seon-ho" and "I believe Cha Eun-woo."

It was similar during the controversy surrounding actor Kim Soo-hyun. Earlier, the bereaved family of the late Kim Sae-ron claimed via the YouTube channel Garosero Research Institute that Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Sae-ron dated for 6 years from when she was 15 to 21. Kim Soo-hyun initially categorically denied the relationship when the controversy broke, but later confessed at a news conference that he dated her after she became an adult in 2019, denying a relationship during her minor years. Kim Soo-hyun also shed tears, saying, "I can't say I did something I didn't." Some reactions have also poured in saying, "Is it just me, or does it feel like people are more lenient toward men?"

■ This week's major K-snapp news?

Hana, formerly of the group Gugudan, drew global fans' attention with an unexpected job she chose after being an idol.

On Jan. 28, Hana communicated with fans in a Q&A format via Instagram. When a fan asked, "The weather is cold these days, which season are you living in?" she replied, "From summer to summer." Asked, "Did you immigrate?" Hana wittily responded, "I can't do that because I have rabbit-like cats."

Asked, "What are you doing abroad, are you studying?" she said, "I am working as a flight attendant. I get around like Hong Gil-dong."

After the news was shared, internet users posted supportive messages, with reactions such as "Cool," "It really suits you," and "The courage to choose a new challenge is impressive."

Korean heritage actors are making their presence felt by joining global hit productions one after another. The drama "Can This Love Be Translated?" (Isatong), starring actor Kim Seon-ho, who has been embroiled in allegations over tax evasion, drew attention as it held a global ranking at No. 6.

FlixPatrol, a global OTT ranking aggregation site, said Bridgerton ranked No. 1 in the TV show category as of Feb. 2, as of Feb. 3 local time. Bridgerton is Netflix's flagship seasonal drama and has a solid fan base overseas and in South Korea.

In Season 4, released on Jan. 29, Korean heritage actor Ha Ye-rin was cast as the lead, drawing the attention of South Korean fans. It was the first time an Asian actor played the female lead in the Bridgerton series. Ha is also known as the maternal granddaughter of veteran South Korean actor Son Sook.

As in the previous week, no South Korean film appeared in the movie category this week. Instead, "The Rip," starring Korean American actor Steven Yeun, ranked No. 1.

As February begins after a break in the weather, the music industry this week is set to be richer, with artists bidding farewell ahead of a brief separation from fans, idol groups returning with strong sound, and solo artists coming back.

Project group Zerobaseone has finished preparing a finale ahead of the end of full-group activities. New music from Jeong Dong-won, returning with calmer, more mature music for fans ahead of his military enlistment, is also drawing attention.

With Ateez, a global group that has steadily grown its presence, also joining, expectations among K-pop listeners are rising further.
