Intel has hired a new chief architect to expand in the graphics processing unit market, CNBC reported on Monday. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan announced the move at the Sys AI Summit and said the company needed to persuade the hire. Intel did not disclose details about the person.

Intel has recently been strengthening its GPU business, targeting the AI infrastructure and data centre markets. With companies such as Nvidia and AMD preempting the GPU market for developing large language models, Intel appears to be moving into full-scale competition.

But Intel has recently been struggling with production delays and supply chain problems. Earlier this year, it reported earnings that beat expectations, but investors are expecting Intel to give a clear answer on whether it can secure key customers in its foundry business, CNBC reported.
