LG AI Research said on Monday it has completed patent registration for EXAONE Discovery, a core technology of its “AI Co-Scientist” that supports new materials and new drug development.

The company said EXAONE Discovery is an AI-based platform for developing new materials and drugs. It analyses multimodal data in various forms, including papers, patents, molecular structures and images, to identify promising candidate substances at speeds dozens of times faster than before and help dramatically shorten development timelines.

EXAONE Discovery is a platform that can produce experimental results by directly selecting molecular structures within unstructured documents or through conversations using labels or tags such as “m3” and “m5”. Unlike other AI patents that generally focus on formulas or algorithms, LG AI Research’s patent covers the entire process, from data analysis to experiment design and prediction of new substances.

LG AI Research explained that the patent registration, No. 2869378, protects the entire R&D process for new substances as intellectual property while securing technological leadership. LG is applying EXAONE Discovery to various industrial fields including cosmetics materials, battery materials and new drug development.

An LG AI Research official said, “This patent is a representative example of LG practicing innovation that goes beyond existing technologies while building an exclusive rights barrier to protect it.”
