Google has agreed to pay $68 million in a lawsuit alleging its voice assistant illegally recorded users' conversations and used them for advertising, TechCrunch reported on Jan. 27 (local time).
Google agreed to pay the class-action settlement but did not admit to any illegal conduct, TechCrunch reported. In the lawsuit, plaintiffs alleged Google recorded conversations without user consent and provided them to third parties.
The issue was highlighted in particular because recordings were made through "false activation" even when users did not invoke the voice assistant.
In 2021, Apple also paid $95 million in a lawsuit alleging Siri recorded users' conversations without permission.
