Kakao will end operations of its video service KakaoTV, which was first introduced in 2017.
On Wednesday, Kakao said on its official blog it will end KakaoTV service from June 30.
Kakao said it made the difficult decision after long deliberation due to the rapidly changing content market and changes in the operating environment.
Ahead of the shutdown, a video backup process will be carried out for users including creators and viewers. Existing uploaded videos can be backed up from 2 p.m. on March 9 until June 30, the service end date. Backups can be downloaded by video through the Video Station and video management menu in KakaoTV.
From June 1, the creation of new channels and the uploading of video on demand (VOD) will be fully suspended. The service will then end окончially on June 30.
Kakao said, "Thank you sincerely for being with KakaoTV," adding, "Although the service has come to an end here, we will closely look after things with a sense of responsibility so there is no inconvenience for users until the very end."
