Tesla has started operating robotaxis in Austin without safety monitors, TechCrunch reported on Jan. 22 local time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk (일론 머스크) said on social media platform X (Twitter), "We have started operating Tesla robotaxis in Austin without safety monitors. Congratulations to the Tesla AI team's achievement."
He added, "Engineers interested in solving real AI problems should join the Tesla AI team," and mentioned the possibility of developing AGI (artificial general intelligence).
Tesla began operating robotaxis in Austin with safety monitors on board in June last year and has been testing without safety monitors since December. At the time, it operated on a limited basis for influencers and pre-selected customers.
Ashok Elluswamy (아쇼크 엘루스와미), head of Tesla AI, explained, "Currently only some vehicles operate without safety monitors, and we plan to expand gradually." It has not yet been disclosed whether the service is free or paid. Tesla did not issue an official position on this.
