Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis (데미스 하사비스) commented that OpenAI's introduction of ads to ChatGPT was "surprising", TechCrunch reported on Wednesday.

Asked about monetising AI through advertising at the Davos forum, Hassabis said, "Google is taking a very cautious approach, and there is no need to rush."

OpenAI recently began testing ChatGPT ads for users who are not paid subscribers. This is interpreted as a way to generate revenue as AI infrastructure and energy costs rise. But Hassabis said, "Advertising developed the consumer internet and can be useful if used well, but in an AI assistant model it can create trust issues."

Google currently has no plan to introduce ads into its AI chatbots and is watching user reaction. When OpenAI introduced an app recommendation feature during user conversations last year, it also drew criticism as "intrusive advertising", and the related feature was ultimately halted. Hassabis said, "Unlike search, a chatbot serves as a personalised assistant, so an advertising model must be reviewed carefully."
