U.S. President Donald Trump is seeking to approve exports of Nvidia's high-performance AI chips to China, prompting strong pushback from China hawks in Washington, CNBC reported on Thursday.

Opposition is also growing within the Republican Party, and the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee is pushing legislation to strengthen congressional oversight of AI chip exports.

Republican Representative Brian Mast (브라이언 마스트) introduced a bill to make AI chip exports subject to congressional approval and called for strong regulation on national security grounds. Controversy has flared as the Trump administration seeks to allow exports of Nvidia's H200 chips to China. If passed, the bill is likely to invalidate existing export approvals as well.

The U.S. dispute over AI chip export controls is also being detected within the Trump administration. David Sacks (데이비드 삭스), the White House official in charge of AI and crypto policy, said he opposed congressional intervention, saying it could weaken President Trump's authority. In contrast, bipartisan lawmakers are warning that AI chip exports could strengthen China's military capabilities.

President Trump allowed exports of Nvidia's H200 chips to China on the condition that the United States take 25 percent of the profits, but Democrats are criticising it as evidence of an inconsistent China strategy. Senator Elizabeth Warren (엘리자베스 워런) of the Senate Banking Committee also made clear her opposition, pointing to the possibility that China could use the chips for military and surveillance purposes.

Despite President Trump's policy shift, Chinese authorities are blocking the import of Nvidia chips.
