Apple unveiled new products while also clearing out much of its existing lineup.

On Monday, IT outlet NineToFiveMac reported that Apple unveiled six new products this week alone, and as a result discontinued seven existing products across iPhone, iPad and Mac. That signals a full-scale generational refresh alongside the new launches.

The discontinued list includes the iPhone 16e, the M4 MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro with M4 Pro and M4 Max, the 512GB M5 MacBook Pro, the M3 iPad Air, the 2022 Studio Display and the Pro Display XDR.

Each has been replaced by a successor model. The iPhone 16e has been replaced by the iPhone 17e, and the M4 MacBook Air by the M5 MacBook Air. The MacBook Pro based on M4 Pro and M4 Max has been replaced with M5 Pro and M5 Max models. The M3 iPad Air has also been replaced by the M4 iPad Air, the 2022 Studio Display by a new Studio Display, and the Pro Display XDR by the Studio Display XDR.

Most are standard generational updates. The basic feature set is similar to the previous models, but performance and some features have been improved in what is described as a model-year change.

The end of sales of the 512GB M5 MacBook Pro is seen as unusual. Apple removed the 512GB base configuration from the lineup a month after launching the M5 MacBook Pro in October last year, shifting buyers to choose only 1TB or higher models. Analysts say that with the entry-level option gone, the minimum purchase specification rises, making a price-hike effect effectively unavoidable.

Changes are also being detected in the display lineup. The new Studio Display has delivered relatively clear improvements compared with the 2022 model, while there is speculation that the newly introduced Studio Display XDR could have mixed pros and cons even as it replaces the Pro Display XDR.

Apple is also reported to still have additional new product announcements planned for this week. There is talk that a MacBook Neo and an iPad with an A18 chip could be unveiled on Wednesday. In particular, if an A18 iPad is launched, there is also a view that the 11th-generation base iPad with an A16 chip, released in March last year, could be discontinued. The 11th-generation iPad is currently the only model among Apple's iPhone, iPad and Mac products on sale that does not support Apple Intelligence, and if it is replaced by an A18 model, it is described as completing a lineup structure in which Apple's entire product range is compatible with artificial intelligence (AI) features.
