South Korea's benchmark KOSPI rose for a 12th straight session on Monday, closing above the 4,900 mark for the first time despite concerns over tariffs under the U.S. Trump administration.

The KOSPI ended up 63.92 points, or 1.32 percent, at 4,904.66, resetting its record closing high.

It was about 95 points away from 5,000, dubbed the dream level.

The index opened down 11.34 points, or 0.23 percent, at 4,829.40 and moved within a narrow range early in the session.

It later turned higher and extended gains, briefly rising to 4,917.37 to set a record intraday high.

It also marked its longest winning streak since Sept. 4 to 24, 2019, when it rose for 13 straight sessions.

The KOSDAQ also rose 13.77 points, or 1.44 percent, to end at 968.36, up for a third straight session.
