After the Windows 11 security update KB5074109 was released, some systems experienced a bug that made it impossible to shut down.

On Jan. 19, online media outlet Gigazine reported that Microsoft has moved to address the issue by releasing an emergency patch. The bug occurred on some devices using the Secure Launch feature, and users found their systems automatically rebooted even when they tried to power off. Microsoft said it resolved the issue by releasing an emergency fix on Jan. 17.

The update also caused multiple issues beyond the shutdown error. Reports said credential entry failed in Remote Desktop connections, or a black screen appeared after the update. The black screen issue involved the display turning black for 1 to 2 seconds before recovering, and occurred on both Nvidia and AMD graphics cards. Some users said they fixed the problem by changing the monitor's DisplayPort mode.

A bug also caused Outlook Classic to close abnormally when using POP accounts, or sent mail not to be saved. Even after closing Outlook, the process continued to run in the background, and users must manually end the process in Task Manager to fix it.

In File Explorer, a problem was also reported in which it ignores the LocalizedResourceName of the desktop.ini file. Microsoft is continuing to check for additional bugs caused by the update and plans to address them with future patches.
