Only three Ethereum-based layer2 projects generated more than $5,000 a day in fee revenue as of Jan. 14, 2026, a survey found. According to CryptoRank, the highest-earning chain was Base, which posted $147,000 in fee revenue. That was more than 70 percent of the total layer2 ecosystem.
Arbitrum ranked second with $39,000, and Starknet was third with about $9,000 in fee revenue.
All other layer2s combined generated only about $15,000. An analysis said this shows a widening revenue gap within the layer2 ecosystem.
Base's dominance is interpreted as reflecting a recent increase in on-chain activity and user expansion. Most layer2s, by contrast, are still posting low revenue and are failing to show a presence within the ecosystem.
