Display specifications for Apple's iPhone 18 series and iPhone Air 2 are taking shape.
On Jan. 14 (local time), IT outlet PhoneArena reported that the base iPhone 18 is expected to feature a 6.27-inch LTPO display supporting a 120 Hz refresh rate, while the iPhone Air 2 is seen using a larger 6.55-inch 120 Hz LTPO display.
Both models are expected to adopt LTPO panels that support variable refresh rates, securing both power efficiency and smoother screen transitions. In terms of design, analysis suggests they are likely to keep Dynamic Island, as before.
The iPhone 18 Pro lineup, by contrast, is expected to mark a clear turning point in display design. The iPhone 18 Pro will have a 6.27-inch 120 Hz LTPO display and the iPhone 18 Pro Max a 6.86-inch 120 Hz LTPO display, but both are expected to remove Dynamic Island. Instead, an under-display method that moves the Face ID sensor beneath the display will be applied, and the front camera is expected to remain a punch-hole design rather than being fully embedded in the screen. This shows Apple is pursuing a step-by-step design to completely remove camera and sensor cutouts from the front display.
The changes are also closely linked to Apple's iPhone 20 Pro in development. According to multiple reports, Apple plans to first apply under-display Face ID technology to the iPhone 18 Pro, then advance it to deliver a complete full-screen design in the iPhone 20 Pro, slated for release in 2027. The iPhone 20 Pro is expected to be a symbolic model marking the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, with a display that extends to every edge without a notch or punch hole.
In the industry, Apple is seen as having chosen a conservative, step-by-step strategy, considering display technology stability and mass-production yield issues. Rather than placing all sensors under the screen at once, the approach is viewed as aiming to reduce technical risk by moving Face ID first. Taken together, information reported so far suggests the roadmap is progressing largely as planned, and assessments say the iPhone 20 Pro is also likely to be unveiled on schedule.
