Apple CEO John Ternus pushed back against outside assessments that Apple has fallen behind in the AI race, TechCrunch reported on Oct. 31.

In a recent interview with Wired reporter Steven Levy, Ternus defended Apple’s current position and said it would actively use AI in new products, the report said.

Apple has often been assessed as having fallen behind in the AI race over the past few years.

In this context, Ternus, a long-serving Apple veteran, officially took office in early September.

Ternus said Apple would use AI but drew a line, saying he did not want to ship “AI for AI’s sake.” He said if it is done right, people do not need to distinguish whether it is thanks to AI or existing software. He stressed that what matters is whether the company made products people really like.

Asked whether AI agents could make apps unnecessary and have a bigger impact on Apple and its ecosystem, he said that could make life much more convenient. He said making products is a deeply human and personal act, and something the company loves.
