Viva Republica, operator of Toss, will regularly inform customers of remaining balances in its prepaid top-up funds, Toss Money, that have not been used for more than 2 years. It will send notifications at least once a year to customers with balances of 1,000 won or more, and allow immediate transfers to accounts in the customers’ own names if they want.
Toss said on Wednesday it will provide guidance on long-term unused prepaid top-up balances together with the Financial Supervisory Service and major prepaid electronic payment instrument operators.
Those eligible for the guidance are customers who have had no history of topping up or using Toss Money for at least 2 years and who have balances of 1,000 won or more remaining. Toss will regularly notify those customers of their balances at least once a year.
The notifications will be provided only through Toss app push alerts. It will not use text messages or email to prevent damage from impersonation of financial services that induces users to click external links or enter personal information.
Customers can check their balances on the Toss app’s Toss Money balance screen and immediately transfer the desired amount to an account in their own name. They only need to select the account and amount, without separate document submission, applications or waiting procedures.
Toss Money has no separate expiration period, so balances do not lapse even if unused for a long time. Customers can keep the balance as it is or use it for payments and transfers, and move it to an account when needed.
A Toss official said, "We plan to provide regular guidance so customers can easily check and manage Toss Money balances that have not been used for a long time," adding, "We will also continuously improve related guidance and usage procedures."
