With more than 97 percent of newly registered private passenger cars in Denmark now fully electric, structural changes across the auto industry are expected. As electric vehicle adoption expands, analysts say industries centred on internal combustion engines, including garages, auto parts companies and fuel stations, need new survival strategies.

CleanTechnica reported on Oct. 13, local time, that as electric vehicle sales surge in Denmark, training repair workers, charging infrastructure and shifts in fuel station business models are emerging as key tasks.

Statistics Denmark said that fully electric vehicles accounted for 97.3 percent of new passenger cars registered by private individuals in September. The share of electric vehicles among all new cars, including corporate vehicles, was 88.6 percent. As of the end of September, about 718,300 electric passenger cars were in operation in Denmark, accounting for 24.2 percent of the country’s 2.97 million passenger cars.

The shift is also affecting the auto repair sector. For mechanics who used to repair internal combustion engines and transmissions, skills in diagnosing electric drivetrains and high-voltage batteries are becoming important.

One Danish electric vehicle driver said training in electric vehicle repairs is expanding locally. The driver added that because many electric vehicles are still under warranty, a decline in existing repair demand has not yet fully emerged.

Electric vehicles do not require engine oil changes, but tyres and suspensions still need servicing. Reduced brake use due to regenerative braking has also been cited as a new maintenance issue because parts can develop rust.

Changes are also expected in the fuel station industry. Henrik forecast that fuel stations’ business base would weaken because much of charging takes place at home.

He pointed instead to the expansion of 11 to 22 kW slow-charging facilities in city centres as a new task.

In Denmark, where the shift to electric vehicles is accelerating, the reshaping of the broader industry ecosystem, including vehicle repairs, fuel supply and charging services as well as new car sales, is emerging as a key focus.
