Seung-a Yoo (유승아), an intern reporter at Digital Today, reports that Anthropic will disclose its third-quarter financial results to potential investors for the first time. It is preparing for an initial public offering and is seeking to gauge investor interest and the market’s response.
CNBC reported on Oct. 13 that San Francisco-based Anthropic is set to disclose the figures at a closed-door meeting with institutional investors on Oct. 14. Anthropic declined to comment.
Financial figures from private artificial intelligence companies have recently been influencing more than individual firms, weighing on tech stocks more broadly. Reports last week about OpenAI’s revenue and accounting treatment caused confusion, putting major semiconductor shares and the Nasdaq index under downward pressure.
OpenAI shared revised revenue figures of $50 billion with existing investors during a fundraising process. That was lower than the $70 billion figure that had been widely known in the market. A person familiar with the matter explained that the result reflected the exclusion of cloud partner revenue and did not reflect changes in demand.
It remains unclear whether Anthropic will apply the same accounting standard and include partner revenue. The disclosure is expected to help investors assess Anthropic’s growth and profitability more accurately ahead of its IPO. Management and the underwriters can also gauge demand by monitoring investor reaction to the disclosed figures.
Anthropic is reported to be pursuing a listing targeting a valuation of up to $2 trillion. People familiar with the plan say talk has emerged that revenue could exceed $100 billion by the end of this year based on the latest revenue estimates. If that valuation is achieved, it could surpass SpaceX’s record listing size.
Anthropic submitted IPO documents confidentially to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission earlier this year, but has not yet disclosed the financial information that would be included in its S-1 registration statement. Reuters reported that Anthropic would list in November, but people familiar with the plan did not confirm a specific listing date.
Market conditions remain a variable. With concern growing over AI-related investment amid rising interest rates, Broadcom Chief Executive Hock Tan (혹 탄) said at a conference on Oct. 12 that if interest rates rise, access to capital could become the biggest constraint for AI companies. As concern grows over the sustainability of funding for AI investment, semiconductor shares also extended declines on Oct. 14.
Whether Anthropic’s listing succeeds is expected to depend not only on the company’s growth prospects but also on market investor sentiment. Investment banks are watching demand for growth stocks and AI names, and the financial disclosure is expected to be an important opportunity to assess the listing value of a major AI company.
