Apple unveiled its next-generation smart speaker, the HomePod mini 2. It strengthens AI features and improves integration with Macs and Apple TV, but lacks Siri AI, a key function. Siri AI will be provided via a software update after the launch.

On Oct. 13, local time, IT media outlet The Verge reported that the HomePod mini 2 uses the S10 chip applied to Apple Watch Series 10. The new chip optimizes sound in real time during music playback and will also support Siri AI in the future.

The U.S. price is $149, up $20 from the previous model. Pre-orders start that day and the official release is on Oct. 30. It comes in five colors: pink, green, blue, white and midnight. The existing HomePod mini will be discontinued.

The biggest change is support for Siri AI. After the update, it will understand natural language commands more accurately and provide tailored responses using personal information such as schedules and messages.

To use personalized functions, users need an iPhone or iPad that supports Apple Intelligence. Siri AI will be offered first in English in eight countries including the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia, while a timetable for Korean support was not disclosed.

There are no major changes to the audio hardware, but new functions were added. "Sound Glow" changes the LED lighting on the top of the speaker to match the album cover colors and the sound of the music being played.

It also supports setting it as the default speaker for a Mac. A persistent AirPlay connection reduces audio latency, and it can be used on Macs that support WiFi 6E or higher.

When connected to the new Apple TV 4K, users can set up surround sound with up to four HomePod speakers. The speakers recognize their installation locations and automatically adjust sound to fit the space.

Apple also unveiled the smart display HomeView and the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K alongside the HomePod mini 2 that day.
