French car brand Citroen plans to revive its signature small car, the 2CV, as an electric vehicle. It aims to unveil a mass-produced model by 2028 and lower the starting price to about 15,000 euros, or roughly 22.52 million won.

Electrek reported on Oct. 11 that Citroen unveiled the electric concept car, the 2CV Concept, ahead of the opening of the Paris Motor Show. The company plans to target Europe’s small electric car market by emphasising a low price, light weight and practicality.

The 2CV is Citroen’s iconic mass-market car that was launched in 1948 and produced until 1990. It gained popularity in Europe for its distinctive exterior, smooth ride and low maintenance costs. It was designed to allow a family of four to ride despite its small body.

The new concept car carries over the original 2CV’s rounded body, round headlamps and large fabric roof. Its body length is 3.76 metres, about 10 cm shorter than the existing model. The bonnet has changed to a higher, more angular shape, while lower wheel arches and the removal of the rear fender skirts create a modern design.

Citroen aims to keep the vehicle’s weight to about 1,000 kg. Its strategy is to reduce battery size and production costs and improve efficiency by making the body lighter. The vehicle is being developed as a small electric car positioned between the Ami and the C3.

The interior also emphasises simplicity. The driver’s seat has a display showing essential information and an 8-inch touchscreen. It also includes a detachable radio and speaker and a storage basket. The inside of the door has a space designed to store eggs, reinterpreting the original 2CV’s practical features.

Key specifications such as battery capacity, driving range and motor output were not disclosed. Citroen plans to apply a new small-car standard called the "E-Car" criteria to models it will mass-produce in Europe.

Still, it is expected to be crucial whether it can meet the price target in the production process while retaining the 2CV’s distinct character and practicality.
