The developer of ArtCraft, an open-source tool set that lets users use Adobe apps for free, has this time unveiled apps to replace Microsoft Office, Tom's Hardware reported on Oct. 11 (local time).
The report said developer Brandon Thomas (브랜든 토마스) released GridCraft, DeckCraft and WordCraft as alternatives to Excel, PowerPoint and Word. All three apps were built with Anthropic's Claude. Thomas posted the apps on the ArtCraft GitHub so anyone can download them for free.
Thomas is a software engineer with 15 years of experience. As ArtCraft gained popularity, criticism followed that it was vibe-coding software and AI low-quality content, or AI slop. Thomas pushed back through his X account, saying he knows how to code.
ArtCraft promotes its ability to provide the same user experience across macOS, Windows and Linux. Adobe apps run on macOS and Windows, but on Linux they require a separate compatibility layer and Windows emulation. Google offers Sheets, Docs and Slides for free through a browser. The online-only approach has the limitation that users cannot own the software.
The ArtCraft Discord community is also growing quickly. Among 3D printing and engineering enthusiasts, an Autodesk alternative app called CADCraft is also frequently mentioned, but Tom's Hardware said most of the apps still fall far short of the level of the products they aim to replace.
