"AI is changing the way we used to work to fit software into a way where software fits the work."

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella (사티아 나델라) stressed that point in a post titled "The Infinite SaaS Factory" that he recently shared on social media platform X (Twitter).

He said users working at companies still spend a lot of time moving between multiple apps to re-figure out what they were doing from the start and manually entering what they want to do in each app in a fixed sequence.

But AI is now changing that approach, Nadella said. He pointed to software development, which adopted agents early and at scale, as the area where the change showed up first. As agent development increased, GitHub also saw a surge in repository creation, pull requests and commit activity.

Nadella also made clear that having more agents does not reduce the importance of systems of record. Systems of record refer to systems that hold core corporate data, such as CRM and ERP.

He said, "A trusted place to manage information and coordinate changes becomes even more important," adding that the same trend is appearing in sales, customer service, finance and operations.

Targeting a scenario where software fits the work, Microsoft is focusing on both the front end and back end of software. Copilot handles the front end, where users interact with software. Microsoft aims to support handling any work with a single Copilot, regardless of the AI model, whether on a PC or a smartphone. Nadella described it as a "new operating system for work."

In the lower layer sits "headless," which opens up business rules and context that were trapped inside individual apps so agents can use them. Copilot and headless are connected through Microsoft IQ.

Nadella said, "Model intelligence becomes useful to enterprises only when it has the right context and execution tools." He said it means "not merely opening existing APIs to LLMs, but designing the work context itself for AI."

Microsoft recently added more than 30 Copilot skills to Dynamics 365 Sales, Service and Customer Insights. It also released "Microsoft Copilot Managed Runtime," which enables programs made with Copilot to run safely within company systems under IT department control.

Nadella said combining the new skills and the execution environment can make "The Infinite SaaS Factory" a reality.

He said, "If you explain in words the functions you need in Copilot Code, you can create custom functions or new SaaS modules." He added, "A true era of 'personal' software opens up, where apps are modified to fit how each person works." Nadella said apps created this way also connect to existing systems of record, so core data does not get scattered by employee.

Nadella said he is not advocating handing all work over to LLMs. He argued for spending tokens only where intelligence adds value, while leaving execution to existing software that is faster, cheaper and more reliable. He said, "It is an opportunity not only to layer new experiences on top of systems of record, but to rebuild systems of record themselves for the agent era," adding, "Some companies will modify existing systems, but others will replace them entirely."
