Samsung Electronics is moving in earnest into the electrification market for heating and cooling in apartments and other multi-family housing. Samsung Electronics on Tuesday announced a carbon-reduction plan based on its 'EHS All-in-One' heat pump at a public briefing on the Korean-style green transformation (K-GX) strategy held at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Seoul.

Samsung Electronics also unveiled plans to build a domestic supply base and expand its business in stages in line with the government's heating electrification policy. The government aims to distribute 3.5 million heat pumps by 2035 to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 5.18 million tons. Along with support for single-family homes, it is also preparing an institutional foundation to expand distribution to multi-family housing. Samsung Electronics plans to launch the product this year and establish a domestic supply base by 2027. It will then move to nationwide rollout in 2028 to 2029.

Samsung Electronics' 'EHS All-in-One' is an air-source heat pump in which a single outdoor unit handles cooling, underfloor heating and hot water. The company said it suits apartments with limited space for outdoor-unit installation because it eliminates the need to separately install an air conditioner and a boiler. It also applies heat-recovery technology used in large-building HVAC systems. The method reuses waste heat produced during summer cooling to make hot water, reducing energy consumption for hot water supply.

Users can check the status of heating and cooling and hot water, and control the system remotely, through the 'SmartThings' device connectivity app. Samsung Electronics plans to expand integration with solar power and energy storage systems (ESS) to support household-level energy-use management.

Ahead of the launch, on-site demonstrations are also under way. Since August, it has been verifying performance, energy efficiency and ease of use at a single-family home in Donam-dong, Jeju City. At Samsung C&T's Residential Performance Research Center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, it has set up an apartment-like environment to measure and analyse power consumption and operating noise. With major construction companies, it plans pilot applications after preparing standard installation solutions that reflect heating and cooling demand by unit size, hot-water supply volume and outdoor-unit room specifications.

Samsung Electronics will increase investment in domestic production facilities and the localisation of core components to strengthen a foundation for shared growth with small and medium-sized partner firms and parts makers. At the 'EHS Heat Pump Dedicated Training Center' at the Suwon CS Academy, it is training B2B partners and specialist engineers through hands-on instruction in piping work, installation, commissioning and after-sales management. It also plans to communicate with the government and industry to seek ways to improve systems and infrastructure needed to expand distribution to multi-family housing.

Park Seung-hee (박승희), president in charge of Samsung Electronics' CR, said the company plans to build a domestic supply base by 2027 in step with the government's heating electrification policy and to push in earnest for nationwide rollout in 2028 to 2029. From 2030, it will seek to expand its global business based on technology and rollout experience accumulated in South Korea, he said.
