Microsoft's (MS) Xbox has reportedly secured exclusive cloud streaming rights for the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI), one of the most anticipated titles this year.
On Oct. 6, local time, IT outlet The Verge cited sources familiar with Microsoft's plans as saying GTA VI is set to be streamed only on Xbox Cloud Gaming when it is released. The duration of the exclusive deal was not known.
GTA VI will be released on Nov. 19 for PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox Series X and S. Nothing is yet known about a PC version. If exclusive streaming is applied, PC users would be able to play via Xbox Cloud Gaming without waiting for a separate PC release. It would also allow access to the game on devices without consoles such as smartphones.
Asha Sharma (아샤 샤르마), Xbox chief executive, said at an internal meeting on GTA VI that the company is preparing something no other platform operator is doing, the outlet reported.
The deal coincides with a revamp of Xbox Cloud Gaming. Starting in November, Microsoft will provide 15 hours of cloud use per month for Game Pass Ultimate, 10 hours for Premium and 5 hours for Essential. Users can buy additional play time after using all included hours. It also plans to introduce a metered pay-as-you-go option to use the cloud by the hour without a separate Game Pass subscription.
Sharma said the next-generation Xbox, dubbed "Project Helix," will also be a lineup made up of multiple devices. Some products are planned to be co-developed with outside companies.
Separately, Microsoft is working on a multi-year partnership with AMD for next-generation Xbox hardware and plans to supply early Helix hardware for developers in 2027.
